Herdsman killed, over 4,000 cows raided in Uror County
A herdsman was killed and about 4,500 cows stolen in an attack carried out by armed bandits on a cattle camp at the outskirts of Pieri Payam in Uror County, Jonglei State on Saturday afternoon, officials said.
Tang Chatim the acting county commissioner told Radio Tamazuj Sunday that, “Kajethar cattle camp near Pieri town was attacked by the criminals on Saturday afternoon, killing one herder on the spot, while the rest escaped unhurt. The attackers also went away with about 4,500 cows.”
He condemned the attack, but that the county is calm despite the incident.
Lt. Colonel John Mawut Ngang, the state police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said they have yet to establish the identity of the attackers.
Late last month, a peace conference between the Murle community of Greater Pibor Administrative and the Lou Nuer, and Dinka of Jonglei State, held in the town of Pieri, resolved to end cattle raids and hold perpetrators to account.
David Garang of the Jonglei Civil Society Network condemned the attack, called on the government to intervene, saying such recurring incidents will render peace efforts useless.
